Why Every Woman Should Consider a Second Opinion Before Hysterectomy

Dr. Shivani Chandan L, Consultant – Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Aster RV Hospital

Hysterectomy—the surgical removal of the uterus—is one of the most performed gynaecological surgeries in India. While it can be life-changing and necessary in specific medical situations, many women are undergoing this major surgery without being fully aware of safer, less invasive alternatives that could address their symptoms just as effectively.

The Rising Incidence of Hysterectomy in India

Recent studies and reports have shown a significant increase in the number of hysterectomies performed across India, including in women as young as their 30s. In many cases, surgeries are performed for conditions that are not life-threatening and may have been managed conservatively. This trend is concerning—not because hysterectomy is inappropriate, but because it may not always be necessary.

    Why a Second Opinion Matters

A hysterectomy is a permanent procedure that ends a woman’s ability to menstruate and bear children. It also carries the usual risks associated with major surgery and may have long-term hormonal and psychological effects.
Before making such a major decision, it’s essential for women to be fully informed about all possible options. A second opinion provides a fresh, unbiased assessment of your condition and can empower you to make the best choice for your health and life goals.

Alternative Options You Should Know About

Not every case of fibroids, heavy menstrual bleeding, or adenomyosis requires the uterus to be removed. In fact, many conditions can be managed effectively through simpler, less invasive treatments:

    1. Hormonal and Non-Hormonal Medications

For many women, medical therapy is the first line of management. Non-hormonal options such as tranexamic acid and NSAIDs can also provide significant symptom relief in select cases. Hormonal treatments like oral contraceptives or progesterone pills can reduce heavy menstrual bleeding and relieve pain.

    2. Mirena – The Hormonal Intrauterine Device (IUD)

Mirena, a levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system, is one of the most effective non-surgical options. It reduces heavy bleeding, provides long-term contraception, and is often used as a conservative treatment for conditions like adenomyosis or endometrial hyperplasia. For many women, Mirena offers hysterectomy-level symptom control—without surgery.

    3. Uterine Artery Embolisation (UAE)

UAE is a minimally invasive procedure that shrinks fibroids by cutting off their blood supply. Performed by an interventional radiologist, it’s a uterus-sparing option with quick recovery, minimal hospital stay, and excellent long-term results for selected patients.

    4. Myomectomy

If fibroids are the primary cause of symptoms and fertility is still a consideration, myomectomy (surgical removal of fibroids while preserving the uterus) can be a better option than hysterectomy. With advancements in laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery, recovery is quicker and risks are lower.

Our Commitment: A Second Opinion That Respects Your Choices

At our Second Opinion Clinic, we believe that every woman deserves the right to understand her diagnosis, explore all options, and choose the path that best aligns with her body, lifestyle, and values.

Whether you have been advised hysterectomy for fibroids, adenomyosis, heavy periods, or any other reason—we’re here to help you make an informed, confident decision.
